Plants in progress

2013-04-29 by Cam Farnell, tagged as Hoop tunnel, Garlic

The seedlings we got from the coop yesterday are now planted in raised bed "Bob" along with the lettuce that we got there two weeks ago. The first photo shows an overview of that bed with the plastic covering held up by hoops of CPVC plumbing pipe. The photo was taken in the middle of a pleasant sunny day so the plastic is open at the ends to keep it from getting too warm inside. At night we close it up to keep the heat in. The second photo shows details: cabbages on the right, peas on the left and various other plants down the bed. They look pretty sparse now but as they grow and mature they get a lot larger so you have to be careful not to crowd them too close together.

The third photo shows garlic starting to pop up nicely in one of the lower beds. We planted the garlic last November before we headed off to Australia although due to time constraints it didn't at that time get covered in straw for protection so we wern't sure how well it would fare. However, it looks to be doing just fine. The shoot nearest the camera is perhaps 10cm tall. In the grocery stores these days it's hard to find garlic that isn't from China. With any luck by late summer we will have our own harvest of very local garlic.
